Well, a left-winger finally said something sensible. Joe Biden’s U.S. Surgeon General, Dr Vivek Murthy, is warning of the harm that social media use does to kids.
Liberals are usually so wrong, they aren’t even like broken clocks — right twice a day. They are more like monkeys on typewriters locked in a room turning out an actual word accidentally once a millennium.
Vivek has issued a warning about the “profound risk of harm” that social media poses to kids.
Per The Guardian:
In a new advisory released on Tuesday, Dr Vivek Murthy calls on tech companies, policymakers and parents to take “immediate action to protect kids now”. He says that in the absence of robust independent research it is impossible to know whether social media is safe for children and adolescents.
“The bottom line is we do not have enough evidence to conclude that social media is, in fact, sufficiently safe for our kids. And that’s really important for parents to know,” Murthy told the Associated Press.
The 25-page advisory, produced as part of the surgeon general’s ongoing investigation into what he sees as a full-blown youth mental health crisis, points to the ubiquitous use of social media by young people. Up to 95% of 13- to 17-year-old Americans use a social media platform, and more than a third say they do so “almost constantly”.
The report shows how current controls on access by children are not working. While most sites apply a minimum age requirement of 13, almost 40% of eight- to 12-year-olds are regular users.
There is a way to limit the damage. Parents, your first job is to make sure NONE of your kids have a cellphone or a social media account.
Still, Vivek is right. Social media brings out the worst in everyone. And I do mean everyone.
Even if you don’t often use social media to be a jerk… you have done so before. And you will again. It is too hard to resist acting like a jerk on social media.
The inescapable fat is that it takes great will power to resist acting like an ass on social media.
It also takes a toll on people. For way too many people, social media seems so damned personal. For instance, when you say something the left dislikes and literally hundreds of them line up to attack you, if you have thin skin it can be excruciating. All too often, people take it all way too seriously and it takes a serious toll on their mental health.
I have been under attack a dozen times on Twitter by radical leftists. Personally, I don’t care even a tiny bit what a liberal has to say. However, the serious wave of hate that came at me for days and even weeks was quite amazing. If I was weak of spine, it probably would have crushed me. And I can see how it would hurt those with less fortitude or less confidence in themselves.
So, yeah, social media is VERY bad for kids.
