Joe Biden claimed to be the hero that saved NATO from big bad Trump. In reality, the opposite was true. We’ve got receipts from the head of NATO himself.
For literally generations, NATO has only been as strong as its budget would allow, and that budget relies heavily in voluntary payment of dues by the other member states.
For years the leaders of member states were guided by the same petty reasoning: Why give away your own country’s money like a sucker when you can just let America do all the heavy lifting?
Trump answered that question with deafening finality. If you can’t be bothered to invest in defending your own back yard, and haven’t kept up to your own military commitments why should we pay?
Biden saw this as corrosive to the strength of NATO, rather than treating other world leaders with the dignity of letting grown adults own the real consequences of their own choices in handling their responsibilities?
The United States must “earn back” the trust it lost over the past four years, the president said. “The United States must renew America’s enduring advantages, so that we can meet today’s challenges from a position of strength,” he said. “That means building back better our economic foundations; reclaiming our place in international institutions; lifting up our values at home and speaking out to defend them around the world; modernizing our military capabilities while leading with diplomacy; revitalizing America’s network of alliances and partnerships that have made the world safer for all people.” — Department of War, Feb 2021
(That was the same speech where he promised, ‘to ensure Afghanistan never again never again provides a base for terrorist attacks against the United States, its allies and interests’ — six short months before Kabul re-enacted the Fall of Saigon on Biden’s watch.)
The actual HEAD of NATO doesn’t see Trump as the threat to NATO. In fact, he’s got proof that Trump’s tough talk forced European partners to take self-defence more seriously. As the cherry on top, the resultant NATO defense spending has been pouring a LOT of money into the American economy in the process.

Contrary to everything Biden tried to tell us, that ‘Trump Trillion’ is a measurement how much stronger NATO is specifically BECAUSE of Trump’s tough talk about other member nations paying their fair share.
