There’s a certain level of political contempt we’ve come to expect from leftwing politicians. But this guy is on a whole other level.
As we near the 25th Anniversary of 9/11, you might expect the mayor of New York to exercise a little… sensitivity to the topic. There are, after all, a great many people who watched (and smelled!) their city burn as emergency crews rushed to rescue people trapped in the burning building, or recover the remains of those who could not be saved. Heroes ran into danger and never came home again.
It was an act of unspeakable evil that brought all of America together for — well, a little while, anyway. But that was a long time ago, and politicians today are banking on the numbness that comes with the passing of time, and the distance that youth puts between themselves and what can only be known second-hand.
Mayor Mamdani, of course, wasn’t around when NYC was hit. Both he and his family have been routinely called out for being sympathetic to Jihadist violence generally (including suicide bombing in particular), and for being friendly with unrepentant supporters of the 9/11 attacks.
For a mayor of NYC, that’s kind of a big deal, maybe?
If he had any real desire to assure the public they misjudged him on this issue, he might have handled the public signing of his Executive Order differently… Or at least keep the ceremonial pen until AFTER the cameras had left.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani spent Friday signing two executive orders tied to the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, then handed the ceremonial pen to Ramzi Kassem, his chief counsel and a man who spent years defending an al-Qaeda operative convicted in a terrorist plot.
The City Hall ceremony covered a pair of 9/11-related orders, one establishing a Day of Remembrance and another aimed at strengthening the city’s defenses against future terrorist attacks.
After signing the final document, Mamdani handed the pen to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch and quietly asked, “Can you pass this?” Tisch passed it to Kassem, who had entered the press conference roughly 15 minutes late. He left shortly afterward, just behind Tisch. — Legal Insurrection
It’s not enough that his legal counsel is the guy who defended one of the al-Qaeda operatives of 9/11… Mayor Mamdani has to be sure to hand him the ceremonial 9/11 executive order pen to him, too.
