Hope is only genuine if it’s anchored in an expectation that cannot fail. We live in a world filled with counterfeit heroes that will come to our rescue and build the utopia clowns keep promising but failing to deliver.
There’s no perfect world on this side of eternity, and no human-designed system that can solve all of the world’s problems, no matter how much we tell ourselves that ‘this time’ will be different.
But that doesn’t stop people from putting their hope in dumb places, and feeling the crushing weight of disappointment when those things do the one thing they can do: fail to live up to expectations. Maybe it’s an institution. Or a political party. Or a heroic reformer with all the answers. Or… (fill in the blank).
That’s the exact reason that the Psalms reminds us that “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.”
Abraham was in a hopeless situation, but dared to Trust God in the midst of it. And he was held up by Paul as the example pointed to in Romans. Why? As an example of who the rest of us should watch for what it means to follow Jesus.
Abraham was never meant to be the one example of fearless trust in an almighty God. We’ve got plenty more where that came from.
