It’s awfully easy for the retreat-and-retrench crowd to cede ground where the secular left claims supremacy. But there’s another, better response.
It’s exactly the same response that helped birth the American Experiment in the first place. And the heart’s cry that preceded a critical event that followed shortly after Independence. The Awakening of a generation that needed to be reconciled to God.
Important political change was coming — after both of the Great Awakenings. But for those changes to take root, we needed to see a change in the people themselves.
As John Adams famously said, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” The French Revolution, it might be claimed, failed where America’s succeeded for exactly that reason. Where America invoked inalienable rights granted by God, France invoked the Nation and the General Will. Five short years later, the world watched in horror as France suspended those rights and unleashed the Reign of Terror — killing at minimum 30,000-50,000 people in 10 months of massacres, orders of magnitude more if you count secondary consequences.
While so many of us fight over scraps looking for voters in hostile districts, some are going back to the original formula. Changing hearts.
Love him or hate him, one guy is bringing the gospel — not to the Bible Belt where drawing a crowd is easy, but to places that are seen as secular strongholds. Ironically, in the same state, Massachusetts, where the FIRST Great Awakening played such an important role.
It’s one thing to see people answer an altar call, quite another to see them walk to the shore — clothes and all — to do the very same thing we see in Acts 8:36.
So many people gave their lives to Jesus tonight and then ran straight into the water to be baptized after Let Us Worship.
We had no towels.
No extra clothes.

For 25 years I’ve been preaching, leading worship, and mobilizing the Church across New England.
It’s one of the hardest places to minister in America—but it may also be one of the most rewarding.
This weekend was one of the toughest we’ve faced all year.
But as hundreds ran to the altar and dozens walked into the water to be baptized, tears filled my eyes.
To stand in the very place where the Pilgrims landed 400 years ago, watching people freely surrender their lives to Jesus, was overwhelming.
We launched the Roots of Revival Tour to remind America of our foundations in God.
Last night, God reminded me that faithfulness through every hardship is never wasted.
The greater the resistance, the greater the breakthrough.
There is no other team on planet earth I would rather do this with than the our crew. Selfless, pure and faithful servants to Jesus.

Of course there will be folks who don’t like his methods or his message. We remind such people of the words of Paul to the Philippians while he was in prison, “The former proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely but thinking to afflict me in my imprisonment. What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed, and in that I rejoice.”
The article cited earlier highlighted the concerted prayer — and action taken — that brought life to the Great Awakening. If we want America to thrive, there is exactly one tool at our disposal potent enough to serve as the salt and light needed to preserve the what make this country worth saving.
And contrary to anything the polls, pundits and pontificators might tell us, the Gates of Hell CANNOT stand against it.
